DARWIN'S ARENA v. T-2.0
FOR TANDY 1000 SERIES - SPECIAL GRAPHICS VERSION !
Darwin's Arena is a combination of the old computer game
called "Life", with some ideas from the illegal sports of
dogfighting or cockfighting. It simulates seven different types
of life form, each with it's own strengths and weaknesses, and
has them engage in a fight for survival. It features animated
16 color graphics, sound, and various options.
This version runs on Tandy 1000 series PC's with at least 256k
memory. The Tandy graphics version will not work if the Tandy has
a VGA graphics card, such as the 1000RLX. A CGA graphics version
is also included for any PC. Tandy 1000 users should type "GOARENA"
at the DOS prompt, for other PC's type "START" or "DARWINS". The
following files must be on your disk:
DARWIN16.EXE - the program file, Tandy 16 color version.
ARENA2.SCR - data file
*.BIN - twenty-one small files with the .BIN extension.
These are data for the graphics.
GRAFIX.COM - Tandy special graphics driver. This is run
before the program itself when you type GOARENA. Written
by Joseph Albrecht, used with permission.
GOARENA.BAT, START.BAT, READCODE.COM - These files load
the GRAFIX driver & run the game program.
DARWIN16.DOC - this text file
REGISTER.DOC - registration form, please read.
DARWINS.EXE, ARENA1.BAS, DARWINS.DAT - these files are for
the CGA version, for non-Tandy PC's.
---- ARCADE MODE --------------------------------------------
In Arcade mode you control monster #1, computer controls
monster #2. Move your fighter with cursor arrows or keypad 2 4 6 8
(try NumLock on some keyboards). Press the key once to jump your
monster one body length in that direction. You can hold the key
down to keep your monster moving in that direction, but when you
are near the other monster don't hold the keys down or you won't
be able to attack quickly enough. In the CGA version, do not hold
the keys down at all, tap them! Move your fighter on top of or
close to enemy until you get within attack range. When "ATTACK!"
appears at bottom of screen you must quickly press space bar to
attack before monster #2 does. Monster #2 attack speed depends on
his quickness rating (e.g. Firebird fastest, Amoebid slowest).
Attacking monster does damage to enemy, then monsters back off & fight resumes.
---- SPECTATOR MODE -----------------------------------------
Each of the seven little monsters in Darwin's Arena can
possibly beat any one of the others, but the odds vary greatly
in certain matchups. Here are the actual ratings for each type:
Attack
Quickness Strength Protection Endurance
Firebird . . . . 16 18 6 9
Saurian. . . . . 10 16 9 15
Crustoid . . . . 10 13 14 12
Dragon . . . . . 12 14 11 13
Ogre . . . . . . 13 12 9 14
Amoebid. . . . . 8 16 6 19
Cyclops. . . . . 14 10 9 14
Quickness determines how often the creature goes on attack.
Each monster has its own characteristic voice, which you
hear when it begins and ends an attack. Attack strength deter-
mines how many hit points of damage the attack does. Protection
means how well the monster can withstand the attacks of his enemy.
Total hit points are based on the endurance rating.
When the fight begins, hit points for the first fighter are
shown in the lower left corner of the screen, points for the sec-
ond fighter in the lower right corner. As attacks do damage, these
totals can be seen dropping. When hit points reach zero, the mon-
ster dies.
This game is shareware. Feel free to upload it to bulletin boards
etc.! Please register it to support my efforts to provide low-
cost games that support Tandy graphics. At $5.00 it's a bargain
since commercial games supporting Tandy 16 color graphics can cost
ten times as much!
